California Judicial Officers Assistance Program

Eligibility

The program is available to a judge or subordinate judicial officer of a superior court, or a justice of the court of appeals or supreme court. The program is also available to spouses and unmarried dependent children.

Number of Sessions

Participants are eligible for up to 5 sessions per family member per incident.

Services

The program provides counseling and consultation services designed to assist the participant and eligible family members with a wide range of personal issues. The services are confidential and the cost is paid by the Administrative Office of the Courts. The sessions last from 30 to 60 minutes and there are limits on the number of sessions depending on the type of counseling.

Types of counseling services include the following:
  • Marital and family problems
  • Relationship issues
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Drug dependency
  • Financial and credit concerns
  • Emotional problems and stress
  • Child care
  • Elder care
  • Pre-retirement planning
  • Federal taxpayer problems
  • Legal issues and questions
  • Interpersonal conflicts

For example, program counselors can help participants and their eligible family members resolve chemical dependency problems by assessing the problem, intervening, breaking denial, arranging for appropriate treatment, and motivating continued sobriety and lifelong recovery.

How to Use the Program

Call the program counselors directly at the toll-free number listed on the back of the program brochure 24 hours a day.

Counseling sessions may be obtained either through telephone consultation or by in-person appointment. Elder care, child care, financial, federal tax, pre-retirement, and organizing life's affairs consultations are provided only by telephone.

A counselor from the program panel will be assigned to the participant or the eligible family member. The counselor can be changed if the participant is dissatisfied with the panel choice. Additional services above the limits of the program are available at the participant's expense.
